Shepherd's hut holidays

Where to find a hut to stay in, what it costs, and the questions that save a disappointing night.

Looking through the open door of a dark green hut to a warmly lit bed inside

The short answer: a shepherd's hut stay is a small, cosy room on wheels, usually in a field, garden or woodland, often with a wood burner and sometimes a hot tub. Huts are among the better-value ways to stay somewhere unusual: in 2022, Which? found a North Yorkshire hut cheaper per week than a static caravan.1 Check what's in the hut itself, because the toilet and shower are sometimes in a separate block.

What a hut stay is like

Many holiday huts sleep two, with a double bed across one end, a small kitchen or kitchenette, and a wood burner or electric heater. Some are self-contained, with a shower room inside; others share a separate bathroom hut or block, which matters on a cold night. Many come with a fire pit outside, and some with a private hot tub.

Stays are usually booked by the night or as short breaks. Canopy & Stars groups huts at "£100 or less per night" as its budget range2, and huts with private hot tubs cost more.
