Shepherd's huts in Devon
Two coasts, two moors and a lot of huts. Which part of Devon to choose, and the local rules worth knowing.
The short answer: Devon has lots of huts, and many are in North Devon and around the edges of Dartmoor. Pitchup lists 18 sites with huts, from £50 a night,1 Hipcamp 26 listings and Glampingstays 20 huts.23 Hot tubs are common on Sykes but rare on Pitchup, so compare sites. Dog owners should check both the Dartmoor lead rules and the summer beach bans.
Where to book
Each site has different Devon huts, so it's worth checking more than one. This is what they showed:
| Booking site | What it showed |
|---|---|
| Pitchup | 18 sites with huts, 2 with a hot tub and 5 that take dogs; from £50 a night1 |
| Hipcamp | 26 listings, a few of them over the border in Cornwall2 |
| Glampingstays | 20 huts among 204 glamping stays3 |
| Sykes Holiday Cottages | 34 glamping stays; most of the huts on its first page had hot tubs4 |
| Campsites.co.uk | 12 sites with huts in South Devon5 |
As shown on each site on 23 October 2026. Counts change daily, and some sites count all glamping, not just huts.
Which part of Devon
Going by the listings, Devon's huts gather in a few areas:1235
- North Devon and Torridge, around Barnstaple, Holsworthy, Hartland and Croyde: a big group, near surf beaches and Exmoor.
- The edges of Dartmoor, around Okehampton, Newton Abbot, South Brent and Ashburton.
- The South Hams, around Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Totnes. Few huts are listed in Salcombe itself; Kingsbridge is the nearest group.
- East Devon, around Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary and Honiton, near the Jurassic Coast.
Hot tubs and prices
Pitchup's Devon huts start at £50 a night, but only 2 of its 18 hut sites have a hot tub.1 On Sykes, most of the huts on its first Devon page had one.4 Hot tub huts we saw on Pitchup were £250 to £290 for two nights.1
Staying near Dartmoor
- Dogs: on open access land, dogs must be on a short lead of no more than 2 metres from 1 March to 31 July, and near livestock at all times.6
- Ponies: don't approach or feed them, as they can bite.7
- Firing ranges: check the firing times on GOV.UK before you walk. Red flags show when and where firing is taking place.7
- Fires: don't light fires on the open moor.7
- Litter: there are no bins on the moor, so take everything home.7
Dogs on Devon's beaches
Beach rules are set by each council. In the South Hams, dogs are banned from Bigbury beach and Mouthwell Sands at Hope Cove from 1 May to 30 September, 10am to 7pm, and from Salcombe's South Sands all day over the same months, except to cross on a lead to the ferry.8 In North Devon, dogs aren't allowed on Combe Martin or Croyde beaches from 1 May to 30 September, and must be on a lead on Croyde's dunes, with a £100 fixed penalty.9 The council is reviewing these rules for 2027, so check before you go.10 Check the rules for the beaches near your hut.
Exmoor's dark skies
Exmoor became Europe's first International Dark Sky Reserve in 2011, and holds a dark skies festival every autumn (in 2026, from 16 October to 1 November).11 A hut on the North Devon side is a good base for it.
Getting there by sleeper
The Night Riviera sleeper runs from London every night except Saturday and calls at Exeter St Davids, Newton Abbot and Plymouth, but it reaches Exeter at about 3am,12 so check your hut's check-in time before you book it.
Before you book
The usual hut checks matter as much here as anywhere: is the toilet and shower inside the hut or a walk away, is the hot tub private and included, and is there a carbon monoxide alarm if there's a wood burner? Our checklist covers the rest.
