Shepherd's huts in Wales
Wales has more huts on the big booking sites than anywhere else we looked. Which part to choose, what it costs and what's changing.
The short answer: Wales is one of the easiest places to book a hut. Campsites.co.uk lists 67 sites with huts there and Pitchup 40, from £36 a night on offer and more often £60 to £140.12 They gather in North Wales around Eryri (Snowdonia) and the Llŷn, in Mid Wales, on the Pembrokeshire coast and around the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). Two of those are International Dark Sky Reserves.3 So far only Cardiff has confirmed a visitor levy, from 1 April 2027; Conwy and Anglesey have held off, and Gwynedd hasn't decided.4567
Where to book
Wales has plenty of choice, so filter for what matters to you: a hot tub, a dog, or a bathroom inside the hut. This is what the main sites showed:
| Booking site | What it showed |
|---|---|
| Campsites.co.uk | 67 sites with huts, including 25 in North Wales and 23 with an ensuite189 |
| Pitchup | 40 bookable sites with huts, 10 with a hot tub and 23 that take dogs; from £36 a night2 |
| Wales Cottage Holidays | 43 huts, 26 with a hot tub10 |
| Hipcamp | 30 sites with huts11 |
| Sykes Holiday Cottages | 128 glamping stays, with no hut-only filter12 |
As shown on each site on 23 October 2026. Counts change daily, and some sites count all glamping, not just huts.
Which part of Wales
Pitchup's area filters show the most hut sites in Mid Wales (17), then North Wales (14), West Wales (11) and South Wales (5).2 Going by the listings, the main areas are:81314
- North Wales and Eryri, around Dolgellau, Bala, Betws-y-Coed, Porthmadog and the Llŷn Peninsula, with a few on Anglesey: mountains, lakes and beaches.
- Pembrokeshire, around Tenby and Penally in the south and Haverfordwest and St Davids in the west: coast paths and sandy bays. Campsites.co.uk lists 12 hut sites on the Pembrokeshire coast.13
- The Bannau Brycheiniog, around Crickhowell, Brecon and Talybont-on-Usk: hills and waterfalls, an easy drive from England.
- Mid Wales and the Ceredigion coast, around Llanidloes, Newtown and New Quay: the quietest part, with the most huts on Pitchup.
Hot tubs and prices
Pitchup's £36 is an offer price; most one-night examples we saw for two adults were £60 to £140, such as £61 near Bala and £135 for a hut with a hot tub near Dolgellau. Many hut sites ask for two nights, and two-night examples ran from £160 near Narberth to £275 near the waterfalls at Pontneddfechan.2 Hot tubs are common: 10 of Pitchup's 40 Welsh hut sites have one, and 26 of the 43 huts on Wales Cottage Holidays.210
Dark skies
Wales has two International Dark Sky Reserves: the Bannau Brycheiniog, since 2013, and Eryri, since 2015. The Elan Valley Estate in Mid Wales is a Dark Sky Park,3 and Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island), off the Llŷn, has been an International Dark Sky Sanctuary since 2023.15 The Pembrokeshire Coast has a string of Dark Sky Discovery Sites, recognised stargazing spots.16 Pick a clear night with no moon.
The Welsh visitor levy
Welsh councils can now choose to charge visitors a small levy on overnight stays. Shepherd's huts pay the higher rate of £1.30 per person per night; the lower 75p rate is for tent pitches and hostel-style beds. The exemption for under-18s applies only at the lower rate, so children in a hut count too.17 Councils have to announce a levy a year in advance.18 On the Welsh Government's checker, only Cardiff has confirmed one, starting on 1 April 2027,4 Gwynedd, which covers most of Eryri and the Llŷn, says it hasn't decided,7 Conwy has put off a decision5 and Anglesey has decided against a levy for now.6 Where a levy applies, it should be included in the price you're shown.17
Getting around
Eryri is busy in summer: nearly 4 million people visit a year, and more than 600,000 walk up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).1920 Since 17 September 2023, the default limit on residential roads and busy pedestrian streets in Wales has been 20mph,21 though councils have since moved some roads back to 30mph. Expect 20mph through most towns and villages on the way to your hut.
Before you book
The usual hut checks matter as much here as anywhere: is the toilet and shower inside the hut or a walk away, is the hot tub private and included, and is there a carbon monoxide alarm if there's a wood burner? Our checklist covers the rest.
