Shepherd's huts in Dorset
Dorset's huts are spread across farms from Lyme Regis to the Blackmore Vale, and many aren't on the big booking sites.
The short answer: Dorset has fewer huts on Pitchup than Cornwall or Devon, and many farms take bookings direct. Campsites.co.uk lists 19 sites with huts, but 8 of them can't be booked through it,1 and Pitchup lists 8, from £45 a night.2 Most are in West Dorset behind Bridport and Lyme Regis, in Purbeck, and in the north around Sherborne and Shaftesbury. Book early, and check the summer dog rules if you're heading for the beach.
Where to book
Because so many Dorset huts are booked direct, use the booking sites to find them as much as to book. This is what they showed:
| Booking site | What it showed |
|---|---|
| Campsites.co.uk | 19 sites with huts, 8 of them not bookable through the site1 |
| Pitchup | 8 bookable sites with huts, 4 that take dogs; from £45 a night2 |
| Hipcamp | 13 listings with huts3 |
| Sykes Holiday Cottages | 8 glamping stays, 2 of them huts4 |
| Glamping Hideaways | 6 stays in Dorset in its shepherd's hut collection5 |
As shown on each site on 23 October 2026. Counts change daily, and some sites count all glamping, not just huts. We may earn a commission if you book through some links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It doesn't change what we write.
Which part of Dorset
Going by the listings, Dorset's huts fall into four groups:123
- West Dorset and the Marshwood Vale, behind Bridport, Charmouth and Lyme Regis: close to the fossil beaches of the Jurassic Coast.
- Purbeck, around Wareham, Swanage, Corfe Castle and Lulworth: big coast walks, Durdle Door and Studland.
- North Dorset and the Blackmore Vale, around Sherborne, Sturminster Newton, Shaftesbury and Blandford: rolling farmland and quiet lanes.
- East Dorset, near St Leonards, West Moors and Wimborne, on the edge of the New Forest. The New Forest National Park itself is "mostly in South-west Hampshire with a small part in Wiltshire".6
Booking direct
Eight of the 19 Dorset hut sites on Campsites.co.uk don't share their availability there, so you'll need to contact the farm.1 Booking direct is normal for small hut sites. Before you pay, get the cancellation terms in writing and check what's included.
Prices on Pitchup start at £45 a night;2 the farm huts we saw there were mostly £200 to £260 for two nights for two adults.2
Walking in Purbeck: the Lulworth ranges
Part of the Purbeck coast is an army firing range. The Lulworth range walks and Tyneham village are open most weekends, and every day over Easter, late May, from 25 July to 31 August, and from 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027.7 Check the dates on GOV.UK before planning a walk from a Purbeck hut. When the ranges are open, keep to the paths marked by yellow posts and never pick up metal objects.8
Dogs on Dorset's beaches
The rules depend on the council. On Dorset Council's main beaches, including Weymouth's sandy beach, Swanage, Lyme Regis front beach and Seatown, dogs are allowed from 1 October to 30 April.9 In Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, dogs aren't allowed on the Blue Flag and Seaside Award beaches from 1 May to 30 September, but some stretches, such as Hengistbury Head and Mudeford Sandbank, welcome dogs all year.10 Some Purbeck beaches, including Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Kimmeridge Bay, allow dogs all year.9 Pitchup shows 4 of its 8 Dorset hut sites taking dogs.2
Dark skies
Cranborne Chase, on the Dorset and Wiltshire border, became an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2019. About two-thirds of it is in Wiltshire,11 but huts in north-east Dorset are within reach, and stargazing events have been held in Dorset villages such as Compton Abbas and Tarrant Monkton.12
Before you book
The usual hut checks matter as much here as anywhere: is the toilet and shower inside the hut or a walk away, is the hot tub private and included, and is there a carbon monoxide alarm if there's a wood burner? Our checklist covers the rest.
