Shepherd's huts in Yorkshire

Moors, dales, coast and two dark sky reserves. Where Yorkshire's huts are, and how to choose.

Sheep grazing on a green field on a spring evening in North Yorkshire

The short answer: Yorkshire has a good spread of huts, especially on the North York Moors and coast. Campsites.co.uk lists 30 sites with huts in Yorkshire, though many have to be booked direct,1 and Pitchup lists 10 in North Yorkshire, with one-night prices from £90.2 The Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks are both International Dark Sky Reserves,34 so a hut break in autumn or winter has a real bonus.

Where to book

Many Yorkshire huts are on small farms that take bookings direct, so use these sites to find them as well as to book:

Booking siteWhat it showed
Campsites.co.uk30 sites with huts; 9 of the first 20 can't be booked online1
Pitchup10 bookable sites with huts in North Yorkshire, 4 with a hot tub and 7 that take dogs; from £90 a night2
Sykes Holiday Cottages71 glamping stays, with no hut-only filter5
Canopy & StarsA Yorkshire hut page, with no count shown; it says all its huts have hot tubs6

As shown on each site on 23 October 2026. Counts change daily, and some sites count all glamping, not just huts.

Which part of Yorkshire

Going by the listings, Yorkshire's huts fall into three main groups:125

There are also huts on the East Yorkshire coast near Skipsea and in West Yorkshire near Holmfirth.1

Hot tubs and prices

Pitchup's North Yorkshire huts start at £90 a night; one-night examples for two adults ran from £90 to £120. Two-night examples ranged from £160 near Kirkbymoorside to £310 near Pickering, and £230 near Hawes in the Dales.2 Four of Pitchup's 10 have hot tubs.2

Booking direct

Nine of the first 20 Yorkshire hut sites on Campsites.co.uk weren't bookable online, so you'll need to contact the owner.1 Before you pay, ask whether the toilet and shower are in the hut, whether dogs are welcome, and the minimum stay, and get the cancellation terms in writing.

Two dark sky reserves

The Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors both became International Dark Sky Reserves in 2020.34 On the Moors, the Milky Way is best on autumn and early winter evenings, with Dark Sky Discovery Sites at Sutton Bank, Danby and Dalby Forest.7 The Dales has four, at the Hawes and Malham National Park centres, Buckden car park and the Tan Hill Inn. The two parks hold a joint Dark Skies Festival, from 5 to 21 February in 2027.8

Getting there by train

The Settle to Carlisle line runs through the Dales, and trains to Skipton, Ilkley and on the Settle to Carlisle line carry bikes. Buses in the Dales run all year, but some are infrequent.9 The heritage Wensleydale Railway runs on selected days from Leeming Bar, near Northallerton, towards Leyburn, so check its timetable before you plan around it.10

On the North York Moors, parts of Fylingdales Moor are still recovering from wildfire damage, and the National Park asks visitors to follow signs and stay on paths.11 It also asks people not to light fires or barbecues anywhere on the moors, so ask your host whether the hut's fire pit can be used.12

Before you book

The usual hut checks matter as much here as anywhere: is the toilet and shower inside the hut or a walk away, is the hot tub private and included, and is there a carbon monoxide alarm if there's a wood burner? Our checklist covers the rest.
