Shepherd's huts in Northumberland
Castles, empty beaches and some of the darkest skies in England. Where to find a hut, and what to know before you go.
The short answer: Northumberland's huts are spread along the coast near Bamburgh and Alnwick, along Hadrian's Wall, and around Kielder. The big booking sites list only a few: Pitchup has 4 sites with huts, from £60 to £120 a night for two,1 so look at Airbnb and farm websites too. It's one of the best places in England for stargazing, and autumn and winter are the best time for it.2
Where to book
Northumberland's huts are thinly spread on the main sites, and many are booked direct or through Airbnb. This is what we found:
| Booking site | What it showed |
|---|---|
| Pitchup | 4 sites with huts, 3 that take dogs1 |
| Campsites.co.uk | 22 glamping sites, 2 of them with huts3 |
| Canopy & Stars | A Northumberland hut page, with no count shown4 |
| Airbnb | Many hut listings, with no count shown; some are over the border in Scotland, Cumbria or County Durham5 |
As shown on each site on 23 October 2026. Counts change daily, and some sites count all glamping, not just huts.
Coast, Wall or Kielder
Going by the listings, Northumberland's huts fall into three areas, each with a very different feel:145
- The north coast, around Bamburgh, Belford, Budle Bay, Howick and Warkworth: castles, long beaches and Holy Island.
- Hadrian's Wall and the Tyne Valley, around Haltwhistle and Hexham: Roman forts and big walks along the Wall.
- Kielder and the North Tyne, around Bellingham and Falstone: England's largest forest,6 the darkest skies and the most remote huts.
Pitchup's hut prices for two adults start from £60 a night plus fees at Kirkharle, £90 near Haltwhistle and Lucker, and £110 at Howick.1
Stargazing
Northumberland International Dark Sky Park covers 572 square miles, including the whole of Northumberland National Park and most of Kielder Water and Forest Park. It's the largest dark sky park in the UK, with Gold Tier status since 2013.27 The best time is autumn and winter, when the nights draw in.2 Kielder Observatory's events are popular, so book ahead.7
Getting there
A direct train from London King's Cross to Newcastle takes about three hours, with local trains to Morpeth and Berwick, and along the Tyne Valley to Hexham and Corbridge.89 For the coast, Alnmouth can be as little as 34 minutes from Newcastle on the East Coast Main Line,10 but it has no taxi rank, so book a taxi in advance.11
Local checks
- Holy Island: check the safe crossing times for the causeway before you go and allow 30 minutes extra, as high winds can change them. The times don't cover the walking route across the sands, so only walk it in daylight with someone who knows the way, and never on a rising tide.12
- Otterburn Ranges: if your hut is near Redesdale, only walk on the ranges outside firing times, when no red flags or lamps are showing. Stay on the tarmac roads, footpaths and bridleways, and don't pick up or kick any object you find.13
- Kielder: the Forest Drive toll road opens from May to December and takes cards only. Kielder Castle was listed as reopening soon when we checked, so look at Forestry England's page before you go.6
- Dogs: Northumberland is sheep country. In spring, ewes and lambs and ground-nesting birds are easily disturbed by a dog off the lead.14 From 1 March to 31 July, dogs must by law be on a short lead on open access land, and on a lead near livestock at all times.15
Before you book
The usual hut checks matter as much here as anywhere: is the toilet and shower inside the hut or a walk away, is the hot tub private and included, and is there a carbon monoxide alarm if there's a wood burner? Our checklist covers the rest.
