What it costs to finish a kit hut

The honest total, line by line, and where the money goes.

The short answer: for a self-built 4.8m hut with a rolling chassis, fixings, insulation, electrics, cladding and paint, most people finish for about £12,000 to £14,000. Add a stove and a shower room and the 5.4m lands between £14,000 and £18,000. The kit is the biggest line, and the rest is your choices.

The extras people add

Where you save and where you shouldn't

Save on cladding (featheredge is cheaper than larch and looks right on a hut), on paint (one good exterior eggshell, not a designer tin), and on the base (sleepers and pads if the hut won't move). Don't save on insulation, on the electrician's certificate, or on the stove installer: those are the three things that make a hut comfortable and safe.

Against a finished hut

The same 4.8m hut bought finished from a UK maker is listed at £20,000 to £40,000 depending on spec (see our costs guide and makers list). The gap is your own time. See kit or finished hut for who should buy which.
