Shepherd's huts in the Cotswolds
Plenty of huts are sold as "Cotswolds". Here's how to find the ones that really are, and which part to choose.
The short answer: Cotswold huts are spread thinly across several counties, and booking sites stretch the name. Of the 11 "Cotswolds" hut sites on Campsites.co.uk, only a few are in the Cotswolds; most are in places such as Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon, Brackley, Oxford and Trowbridge.1 Glampingstays lists 7 huts under the Cotswolds, though its results also stretch into Warwickshire and Worcestershire.2 The real Cotswold huts gather around Cirencester and Kemble, in the Stroud valleys and in the north around Winchcombe. Check the postcode before you book.
Where to book
Read the location on every listing, because "Cotswolds" results often include the Forest of Dean, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and Oxford. This is what the main sites showed:
| Booking site | What it showed |
|---|---|
| Campsites.co.uk | 11 sites with huts labelled Cotswolds, most of them outside it1 |
| Glampingstays | 7 huts among 57 glamping stays, some outside the Cotswolds2 |
| Pitchup | 9 sites with huts in Gloucestershire, about half in the Forest of Dean3 |
| Sykes Holiday Cottages | 27 glamping stays, with no hut-only filter4 |
| Glamping Hideaways | 5 stays in the Cotswolds in its shepherd's hut collection, including near Chipping Norton and Longborough5 |
As shown on each site on 23 October 2026. Counts change daily, and some sites count all glamping, not just huts. We may earn a commission if you book through some links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It doesn't change what we write.
Is it really in the Cotswolds?
The Cotswolds National Landscape covers 790 square miles, running "from Bath and Wiltshire in the south, through Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire to Warwickshire and Worcestershire in the north", across 15 council areas.6 It's a big area with a fixed boundary, but booking sites use the name much more loosely. The Forest of Dean, west of the Severn, is a lovely place for a hut, but it isn't the Cotswolds.
Which part of the Cotswolds
Going by the listings, the huts in or near the Cotswolds fall into three main groups:347
- The south, around Cirencester and Kemble: easy to reach by train from London to Kemble.
- The Stroud valleys, around Stroud and Stonehouse: steep, wooded and quieter than the honeypot villages.
- The north, around Winchcombe and Broadway: classic Cotswold villages and the Cotswold Way.
There are also huts around Chipping Norton on the Oxfordshire side.1
What it costs
No booking site gives a typical Cotswold hut price, so here are examples from Pitchup for two adults: £69 a night for a hut near Chipping Norton, £190 a night for an adults-only hut with a hot tub near Cirencester, and £198 for two nights near Stroud, plus £65 in fees.83 Check whether fees are added at checkout.
Avoiding the crowds
Cotswold district alone had about 5.4 million day visits in 2024. Across Gloucestershire, day visits peak in June and staying trips in August.9 A hut lets you see the famous villages early in the morning or in the evening, after the day-trippers have gone. A midweek or autumn stay is quieter still.
Trains and walking
Stations serving the Cotswolds include Kemble (for Cirencester), Moreton-in-Marsh, Stroud, Stonehouse and Cheltenham Spa, with Charlbury and Kingham on the Oxford to Worcester line. Kemble is easy to reach from London Paddington.10 Many huts are on farms a few miles from a station, so ask your host about a taxi.
The Cotswold Way runs 102 miles from Chipping Campden to Bath and is open all year,11 passing close to the huts around Winchcombe and Stroud.
Before you book
The usual hut checks matter as much here as anywhere: is the toilet and shower inside the hut or a walk away, is the hot tub private and included, and is there a carbon monoxide alarm if there's a wood burner? Our checklist covers the rest.
