Shepherd's huts in the Peak District
Huts here are fewer and more scattered than you might expect. Where to look, which side of the Peak to choose, and what to check.
The short answer: Huts in the Peak District are fairly scarce, so book early. Campsites.co.uk lists 8 sites with huts in Derbyshire and Glampingstays 7 huts in the Peak District,12 spread around the Hope Valley, Eyam, Chatsworth, Buxton and Ashbourne. A couple are near Hope station on the Hope Valley line. Fires and barbecues are banned in the open countryside, so ask your host what's allowed at the hut.3
Where to book
Each site lists only a handful of Peak District huts, so check several. This is what they showed:
| Booking site | What it showed |
|---|---|
| Campsites.co.uk | 8 sites with huts in Derbyshire, 4 not bookable through the site, and not all of them in the Peak1 |
| Glampingstays | 7 huts among 22 glamping stays, some outside the National Park2 |
| Sykes Holiday Cottages | 22 glamping stays in the Peak District and Derbyshire, with no hut-only filter4 |
| Pitchup | 2 bookable sites with huts in Derbyshire5 |
| Visit Peak District | A glamping directory that includes huts, such as the five at Chatsworth6 |
As shown on each site on 23 October 2026. Counts change daily, and some sites count all glamping, not just huts.
Which side of the Peak
The Peak District covers parts of five counties: Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. It's usually split into the gritstone edges of the Dark Peak, the limestone dales of the White Peak, and the farmland of the South West Peak.7 Going by the listings, huts gather in a few places:126
- The Hope Valley and Edale: huts at Hope, close to Kinder Scout and the Hope Valley railway.
- Eyam, Baslow and Chatsworth: villages, estates and easy walking. The five huts at Chatsworth's Heathy Lea each have a bathroom and a log burner.8
- Around Buxton: the higher, wilder western side.
- Ashbourne and the southern dales: a hut near Alsop-en-le-Dale, handy for Dovedale and the Tissington Trail.
Check it's really in the Peak
Booking sites label huts "Peak District" generously. Among the results we saw were huts in south Derbyshire, near Chesterfield and Marple, and in Rugeley, Staffordshire, all outside the National Park.124 Check the postcode on a map before you book if you want to walk out of the door onto the hills.
Going by train
The Hope Valley line between Manchester and Sheffield stops at Grindleford, Hathersage, Bamford, Hope and Edale. There are also trains from Derby to Matlock and from Manchester to Buxton, with buses on into the dales.9 From London St Pancras, Derby is under two hours.10 With more than 13 million visitors a year,7 arriving by train also saves a hunt for parking.
Fires, barbecues and dogs
- Fires: barbecues, disposable barbecues and "any form of open fire and flame are not permitted in the open countryside", and in some council areas, rules that also cover camping stoves carry fines of up to £1,000. A fire on a campsite needs the landowner's permission.3 Ask your host whether the hut's fire pit can be used.
- Dogs: from 1 March to 31 July it's the law to keep dogs on a lead of no more than 2 metres on open access land, and on a lead around livestock all year.11
Stargazing
The Peak District isn't an International Dark Sky Place yet, though it's working towards one, and it has three Dark Sky Discovery Sites: Surprise View near Hathersage, Parsley Hay near Hartington, and Minninglow near Pikehall. The nearby car parks close between midnight and 6am.12
Before you book
The usual hut checks matter as much here as anywhere: is the toilet and shower inside the hut or a walk away, is the hot tub private and included, and is there a carbon monoxide alarm if there's a wood burner? Our checklist covers the rest.
Huts in other areas
